What Is Fever?

Fever is a temporary increase in body temperature that usually happens when the body is fighting an infection or illness. A normal body temperature is generally around 98.6°F (37°C), but it can vary slightly from person to person. When the body temperature rises above the normal range, it is commonly considered a fever.

Fever itself is not a disease. It is a symptom that signals the immune system is responding to viruses, bacteria, or other health conditions. In many cases, fever helps the body defend itself by creating an environment that makes it harder for harmful germs to survive.

Common Causes of Fever

There are several possible reasons why a person may develop a fever. Viral infections such as the common cold, flu, or seasonal infections are among the most common causes. Bacterial infections, food poisoning, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and certain inflammatory conditions may also lead to elevated body temperature.

Children and adults can both experience fever. Sometimes it may appear suddenly, while in other cases it develops gradually along with symptoms like tiredness, chills, sweating, headache, body pain, or weakness.

Symptoms Associated With Fever

A fever may occur along with different symptoms depending on the underlying cause. Common symptoms include:

  • Warm forehead or body
  • Chills and shivering
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sweating

Some people may experience mild fever that resolves within a short time, while others may develop high fever that requires medical attention.

When To Seek Medical Attention

It is important to monitor fever carefully, especially in young children, elderly individuals, or people with existing health conditions. Medical attention may be needed if the fever becomes very high, lasts for several days, or is associated with symptoms such as breathing difficulty, confusion, severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, or severe pain.

Staying hydrated, taking proper rest, and monitoring body temperature can help during recovery. Avoid self-medication without professional guidance, especially if symptoms continue or worsen.

Understanding Fever

Fever is a natural response of the body and is often a sign that the immune system is actively working. Recognizing symptoms early and understanding possible causes can help individuals take appropriate steps toward better health and timely care when necessary.
