What Is Fits?

Fits, also called seizures, are sudden episodes caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. During a fit, a child may lose awareness, stare blankly, shake, become stiff, fall, or show unusual movements for a short time. Some fits last only a few seconds, while others may continue for a few minutes.

Common Signs of Fits in Children

Symptoms may vary from child to child. Some common signs include sudden jerking of hands or legs, rolling of eyes, frothing from the mouth, temporary unconsciousness, confusion after the episode, or unusual drowsiness. In some cases, the child may simply stop responding and stare without body movements.

What Can Cause Fits?

Fits can happen due to many reasons. High fever, infections, head injury, low blood sugar, lack of sleep, genetic conditions, or brain-related disorders may trigger seizures. Fever-related fits are commonly seen in young children and can be frightening for parents, but every episode should be properly evaluated.

What Should Parents Do During a Fit?

Stay calm and place the child on one side in a safe area. Remove nearby sharp objects and loosen tight clothing around the neck. Do not put anything into the mouth, do not forcefully hold the child, and do not give water or food during the episode. Note the duration of the fit and observe the symptoms carefully.

When to Consult a Doctor?

Immediate medical attention is needed if the fit lasts more than five minutes, happens repeatedly, occurs after a head injury, or if the child has breathing difficulty, bluish lips, severe weakness, or does not wake up properly after the episode.

Diagnosis and Care

A doctor may suggest blood tests, fever evaluation, EEG, or brain imaging depending on the child’s condition. Treatment depends on the cause, age, frequency of episodes, and overall health. Early evaluation helps identify the reason and plan safe care.

Important Note

Fits in children should never be ignored. Proper diagnosis, timely treatment, and regular follow-up can help reduce risks and support better health. Always consult a qualified child health specialist for guidance.
